20|This Will Be the Year on Everyone’s Lips

Against Again Troupe

2022

90 mins | Concert

This Will Be the Year on Everyone’s Lips is a closing concert for the 20th anniversary of the Taishin Arts Award. Also twenty years old this year, Against Again Troupe has always centered on issues of gender, class, social struggle, and biopolitics. Bringing together theater music, independent musicians, and activists, this concert features “A Silent Left Hand,” the first theatrical song about new residents in Taiwan performed in 2007; the Chilean revolutionary song sung in the Untouchables’ Liberation Area after the Legislative Yuan was occupied on March 23, 2014; the White Terror-themed leftist song, Clear White Song from 2019, along with a selection of adapted and covered songs about gender, sexual rights, and labor by independent musicians.

We shall revisit the 21st-century Taiwanese history of struggles via poetry, and directly face the current and future social situations with our works.

Against Again Troupe

Against Again Troupe was founded in 2002, by a group of Taiwanese theatre practitioners coming from diverse artistic backgrounds. In an earlier period, the Troupe engages in environmental theatre, poetry theatre, and multimedia theatre, through which they have examined the human condition in the age of globalization in regards to gender, class, and survival, while making theatrical productions, music performances, exhibitions, and independently curated theatrical exhibitions. In recent years, they have concentrated on the aesthetic practice of “sound theater,” and have been awarded the Gold Prize in Sound Design in the World Stage Design for Götterdämmerung. From small-scale, avant-garde projects, interdisciplinary works staged in non-theatrical spaces, to medium- and large-scale theatrical productions, Against Again Troupe continues searching for and practicing ways for theatre art to resist the phenomena of cultural homogeneity and the apolitical postmodern esthetics in order to escape from the aphasic state. We shall revisit the 21st-century Taiwanese history of struggles via poetry, and directly face the current and future social situations with our works.
